And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither, I will show you the judgment of the great whore πόρνης that sits upon many waters. Revelation 17:1
The most interesting area of study of Revelation 17 and 18 are translating the English interpretations back into the original Greek and breaking down the meaning behind those Greek words. Some of the English translations (in my opinion) were poorly chosen.
John chose his words very carefully when drafting his account detailing specifics that are not found in the English translations. Studying the Greek which John used gives us a clearer picture of what John was witnessing while in the spirit.
For example the Greek word translated into the English as great (megas) whore is πόρνης which means commercially corrupt one, to export or sell a product or commodity immorally for profit or gain. This is generally defined or translated into English by its root πόρνη which is simply pornēs, prostitute or prostitution. This is where the term whore or harlot originated from, from the root of πόρνης.
But, the Greek word πόρνης has a deeper meaning that the root word does not accurately define.
So the question is: what was John documenting with the Greek word πόρνης? πόρνης is defined as: immoral in trade, and commercial misconduct; to export across the sea, – ‘a commercially corrupt trader, to traffic or to sell immorally’; immoral trade of merchandise for financial or material gain. πόρνης is the feminine form of πόρνος which is the Greek for: male prostitute or sex trafficker. The feminine translation would simply mean a female prostitute or sex trafficker.
The harlot is involved in sex trafficking, commercialized human trafficking and perhaps organ harvesting suggesting that it will become legalized under the beast system. This is further supported by Rev 18:13b, as part of her many imports ..... and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and the souls of men. (human lives)
The harlot is also involved in the distribution of pharmaceuticals (her sorceries, magic, witchcraft, pharmakeia, spiritual harlotries 18:23b) drugs that she uses as one of her many lures to entrap and corrupt the souls of men. These are used in the practice of magic and contacting demons, sorcery - drug infused witchcraft, the enchantments that have confused and deceived the nations for millenniums. These she shares as an commodity with the kings of the earth who pass them onto the inhabitants of the earth. (Rev 17:2, 18:3)
During the tribulation period, pharmaceuticals will be manufactured and widely distributed, handed out like candy. This will keep the kings of the earth spellbound to the harlot and the inhabitants of the earth will be forever bound to the chains of addition in a form of spiritual intoxication. This will be used as a control mechanism. The people of the earth will be drug induced, primal beings, worshipping demons and the ancient Babylonian gods (Daniel 5:4,23b) of gold, silver, brass, stone and wood, sacrificing others to 'their' god.
And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see nor hear, nor walk. Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication (immorality), nor of their thefts. Revelation 9:20,21 Daniel 5:4,23b
Harlotry is not only defined as one who chases after idols or other gods but those who indulged in spiritual occultic decadence such as devil worship, witchcraft, seeking after diviners or mediums who called upon familiar spirits (demons) or, the spirits of the dead.
These are some things that will bring about her demise.
Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him to commit whoredom (play the harlot) with Molech (god of child sacrifice, false gods in general). And the soul that turns after such as have familiar spirits (demons), and after wizards to go a whoring (play the harlot) after them, I will set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people. Leviticus 20:5,6
She is described by the Greek word πόρνης - commercially corrupt one, a commercialized immoral harlot, selling her harlotry and influence; the femme fatale, a vamp, the female trafficker across international boundaries. John laid this out in the very first verse of Chapter 17. This is what the angel wanted to show John; the mega polis, full of commercial and spiritual harlotry,
And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me saying unto me, Come hither; I will show unto thee the judgement of the great whore (Greek: πόρνης commercially corrupt one) that sits upon many waters.
Right out of the gate in verse 1, we have an angel who wants to show John the judgement that is about to fall upon a commercially corrupt city that trades in religious wickedness which is generally defined as false worship and spiritual harlotry. As defined, spiritual harlotry can be in the form of idolizing false gods, idol worship or, indulging in occultic practices.
She is the Mother of harlots in verse 5. The Greek word for her harlots in this verse is: πορνων - commercially corrupt ones, other cities under her jurisdiction that are as commercially corrupt as she is.
In verse 15 the root word is used as she is the great prostitute πόρνη who sits on many waters: people, multitudes, tongues and nations, showing that her reach is an international one. By scriptural position she may very well be the capital city of the world; or the location of the AI software and database controlling buying and selling, which is tied to worship.
In this way she spreads her harlotry throughout the world similar to how the mystical arts of the occult: magic, sorcery and witchcraft, were spread throughout the ancient world -- by way of trade ships and nomadic merchants. Her only exports are her sorceries aka: pharmaceuticals, witchcraft and human suffering.
And the woman that thou sawest is that great (megas) city (πολις, polis); which reigneth over the kings of the earth. Revelation 17:18
Note: In the Bible, the prophets often used feminine metaphors when describing the distinguishing qualities of a city: she, her, woman, wife, bride, widow, mistress, sister, daughter and harlot were the most commonly used. This was done so readers could understand the characteristics of a city in humanistic terms or the relationship to Yahweh or Christ Jesus. We see this throughout the Bible such as Isaiah 47: Babylon is a defiled and defeated queen thrown from her throne to wallow in the dust. Nahum 3:4: Nineveh was the well favored harlot and the mistress of witchcraft that trafficked families through her witchcraft. Ezekiel: 16:55,56: Sodom was the sister city with many daughters. Rev 12: Israel is the woman who will be chased through the wilderness by the dragon in the tribulation period. Judah Jerusalem and Israel are the wife of Yahweh Jeremiah 3:20, who were called unfaithful when they played the harlot with other nations Isaiah 1:21. Rev 17 depicts a wicked city full of vile intoxication connected to the rise of an evil kingdom. And, finally, New Jerusalem is the bride or wife of the Lamb. Rev 21:2, 9b,10
And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buys their merchandise any more. The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her… Revelation 18:11,15a
